A new inventory for fishes of headwater streams from the rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins, rio Paranapanema system, Paraná, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Frota,Augusto; Ota,Renata Rúbia; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho; Ganassin,Maria Julia Mileo; Graça,Weferson Júnio da.
Abstract: The rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins are important tributaries of the rio Paranapanema, a major left-bank tributary of the upper rio Paraná basin. The upper reaches of both drainages intersect the northern portion of the APA Escarpa Devoniana (Devonian Escarpment Environment Protection Area, EPA), an area considered crucial for the preservation of biodiversity. This study aimed to provide an ichthyofaunistic inventory for headwater streams of the rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins, both within and off of the borders of the EPA, increasing the knowledge about the species already known from streams in the rio Paranapanema system. We found 32 fish species, representing five orders and 12 families. Siluriformes was the richest order followed...

Characidium xanthopterum (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Crenuchidae): a new species from the Central Brazilian Plateau Neotropical Ichthyology
Silveira,Luiz G. G.; Langeani,Francisco; Graça,Weferson J. da; Pavanelli,Carla S.; Buckup,Paulo A..
Characidium xanthopterum is described from tributaries of the upper rio Paraná and upper rio Tocantins basins, in the Central Brazilian Plateau, Goiás State, Brazil. The new species is diagnosed among congeners by the absence of dark bars on the sides of the body in adult specimens, and by the deep yellow coloration in all fins. Ontogenetic change of color pattern is recorded for the first time for Characidium species. Specimens smaller than 32 mm SL possess dark bars on body. These bars disappear with growth between 32 and 35 mm SL, and are always absent in individuals larger than 35 mm SL.

Fish assemblage structure in tributaries of the Meia Ponte River, Goiás, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Fialho,Afonso P.; Oliveira,Leandro G.; Tejerina-Garro,Francisco L.; Gomes,Luiz C..
This study was conducted in the Meia Ponte River basin, which is located in the Cerrado biome. The objective was to describe the structure of fish assemblages and to evaluate the results with the regard to the position of the tributaries (sampling stations) along the basin. This basin drains 35 municipalities of Goiás State. Springs of the Meia Ponte are located in the district of Itauçu (GO), in the Serra dos Brandões. Two sampling were conducted, one in the rainy season (March/2001) and another in the dry season (August/2001). Thirty sampling sites in tributaries and one in the channel of the Meia Ponte River, in its upper course, were selected to capture fish with dipnets (3 mm mesh) during one hour, along 100-m stretch. Sampling periods (season; rainy...

Fish assemblages in stream stretches occupied by cattail (Typhaceae, Angiospermae) stands in Southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rocha,Fabíola Carla da; Casatti,Lilian; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério; Silva,Alexandre Marco da.
Macrophytes are a major component of lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. As consequences of environmental degradation, species of cattail (genus Typha) may become dominant along streams. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure and feeding of fish assemblages in stream stretches under influence of Typha sp., also addressing the influences of temporal variation on composition, abundance, biomass, diversity, species richness, and feeding of fish. Six streams (labelled S1-S6) in the upper rio Turvo basin, southeast Brazil, with dense stands of Typha sp. in the instream and riparian habitat, were studied in six campaigns during three central months in both of the dry and wet periods, by using a standardized collection effort. Thirty-seven...

Pimelodus heraldoi Azpelicueta, 2001, a junior synonym of Pimelodus microstoma Steindachner, 1877 (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Ribeiro,Frank Raynner V; Lucena,Carlos Alberto S.
The examination of the holotype and 61 of the 64 paratypes of Pimelodus heraldoi, syntypes of P. microstoma and additional specimens from the upper rio Paraná showed that the former species is a junior synonym of the latter. Both species were originally described from the rio Mogi-Guaçu, upper rio Paraná.
